Defensive driving techniques are based on “Driving: The Essential Skills” and the police driving handbook "Roadcraft", which stresses the need for drivers to have the correct attitude and to drive responsibly at all times. Defensive driving is about concentrating, observing and anticipating. By applying these three correctly the driver will always have space around the vehicle and time to plan.

Eco-driving is now coming more to the fore due to the increasing cost of fuel and concern about emissions. Eco-driving uses many of the techniques used in Advanced/Defensive driving and therefore skills gained in one compliment other aspects of driving.

Eco-driving is now becoming more relevant due to heightened awareness of climate change and the high cost of fuel. Techniques used in defensive driving reflect the same ethos as eco-driving and therefore they compliment each other.
